Spring is here
March 17, 2009 by grjenkinI love the seasons, but I’ve become more aware since I hung the blue birdfeeder a couple of years ago. The pesky squirrel, the woodpecker, the doves, the rain – all, technically, data visualizations in a digital world telling a story.

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.
Moina Michael, Georgia educator (1869-1944)
Below is a Many-Eyes.com link. Using data visualization, we can better understand the number of lives lost in various U.S. wars.

One of the first references to a U.S. Memorial Day was in 1867. A song was published, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet. The song carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead."
Here in Texas, we still commemorate the dead from the Civil War on January 19th.
Your Identity is Showing
May 11, 2008 by grjenkinAn IP (Internet Protocol) Address is a unique numerical address assigned to your computer and every other computer on the Internet. It's like your street address but for the World Wide Web.
You should know that your IP address is automatically shown to every website you visit, including this one. Even if you just view an image from a website, your IP is broadcast to that site. It shouldn't be a problem for you, but if it is, then you need inexpensive anonymous Internet browsing software.

Blog It, SuprGlue or RSS Feeds?
April 26, 2008 by grjenkinI'm testing this BLOG IT application on Facebook.
When I blog using BLOG IT, it automatically posts to six of my other blogs plus my Facebook minifeed and Twitter.
This is like a reversed SuprGlue, in which I post to any of six sites and they all show up on Garry's Blog via SuprGlue.
I think my RSS feeds might accomplish the same as either of the above, but I'm giving it a try.

Treemaps
April 15, 2008 by grjenkinEagerEyes, under Visualization Techniques, has a wonderful post called Treemaps by Robert Kosara, 2008-04-13. It helps us understand the power of treemaps for data visualization.
